Small Plate Craze Hits CRAVE

Starters, snacks, small plates…these small bites are becoming big hits.

Inspired by “tapas”, the Spanish style of dining consisting of smaller-portioned snack dishes, the small plates trend is making a huge impact on restaurants everywhere.  While it it may seem as though small plates have just become mainstream, the trend has actually taken off over the course of the last decade. Back in 2003, Michelle Huneven of the LA Weekly described a certain freedom tied to small plates: “No longer do you have to commit yourself to one entree – or even, one restaurant.”

With small plates, the dining possibilities are endless.

Guests can mix-and-match familiar flavors and experiment with new ones! While often viewed as a “starter” or “appetizer” course, more diners are replacing their main course with these dishes. This is the beauty of small plates: their versatility as the start or the star of your meal gives you the freedom of deciding the size and scope of your dining experience. As Pete Wells recently stated in the New York Times, “the only limitation is the size of the table.”
