A Minnesota Holiday is a compilation of holiday favorites from local Minnesota artists, with proceeds benefitting bethematch.org.
We sat down with artist and composer, Phil Thompson, who is Executive Producer of A Minnesota Holiday, to learn more about the inspiration behind the CD and more about the great organization it benefits!
What inspired the Holiday Light album?
I knew I wanted to start a compilation that feature local artists and giving back is very important for me, so the Holidays seemed like a great fit.
What makes each volume unique?
Each year we get dozens of artists who submit tracks for inclusion and what we’re really looking for is a unique arrangement that puts a fresh take on a holiday favorite. Because these songs are so well known it can be hard for them to stand out so when a song does stand out, that’s one we know we want to include.
For example on this volume, Tim Mahoney’s cover of “Christmas Means Love,” and Chris Koza’s cover of “Christmas is the Time to Say I Love You,” are refreshing, because they’re not the most known holiday songs and these artists were really able to put their own take on them.
What’s your favorite track on Volume 7?
I would actually say it’s the first track, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman,” by The Blenders. They have such a great harmony and great arrangement. Really though, there is something for everybody on this CD; country, pop, acoustic, and full production songs.
What would you say is the greatest difference between being the producer and being the artist?
As Producer you’re looking at it from 10,000 feet. You’re seeing the whole picture and trying to figure out how everything fits together. As the artist, you only need to think about your one song. I love going into the studio and being the artist, but it’s also great to be able to work with multiple artists in the Producer role. This project in particular is very rewarding, because of Be The Match.
Tell us more about Be The Match.
Be The Match is a National bone marrow registry. There is a very low percentage of people with cancers like Leukemia or Lymphoma who match up with their family members, and having this national bone marrow registry makes it possible to match up donors with people who need them. This is just such a great organization and we’re proud to be partnering with them on this.

Last question, what’s your favorite menu item at CRAVE?
I would have to say the Rainbow Roll. It’s a classic.
